It could be from natural crosses in the wild that we have such a confusing load of plecos in the Amazon. Someday they may decide that many now called a species may only be a subspecies or a colour phase of something else.

I agree Charlie .......If they can mix in the aquarium they can surely mix in a river and alot of these fish are from the same river and different locales are not a deterrent to cross breeding in the wild

Not sure that is true. From my experience, the L46 have a tendency to reject any sibblings that does not have similar markings. Even deformaties are out cast from the main group.

Those L46X, they may have been force breed rather than occuring naturally ... this is just a though ... not a thesis.

I hate to admit this, but they do look pretty though.
