Hi Guys,

Posting here for the first time. I had an opportunity to obtain the blue-eyed plec that SAKU offered. Its a pretty cool fish and was well taken cared of. He now swims up to the front of the tank whenever I approach. Looking at the head, it somehow reminds me of an elephant. Oh, I also didn't know what they meant by 'spoon-shaped teeth' until I saw closeup of PIC5  .

Hope you enjoy !

John

Some great photos! Congrats once again on picking him up!

You should submit those photos to planetcatfish, some great closeup shots you've got!

Geez, that's easy enough to do. I usually go to go to Planetcatfish to reference L-numbers and didn't really pay attention to their how-to's. Thanks again.

Wow, he's a beauty.
Have you had planet catfish ID him as a cochliodon or a suttonorum?
I think I taged him as a cochliodon because he was in the hobby for a long time. And at the time, those that where sold in the hobby was mainly cochliodon.
How big is he anyway? From the size of his birstles, he looks like a full grown adult. He should be, considering that he's at least 10+ years old.
A very nice pleco. You're making me wish I didn't pick him up last year. LOL.
Unfortunately, my interest is in the suttonorum not a cochliodon. *sigh*

I think you're right about it being a cochliodon. I emailed Jools at Planetcatfish the pics and he did think it looked like a cochliodon. This guy measures just a bit over 12". Would be nice to see a suttonorum one day just to compare the differences between the two.

Thanks again !!

Yeah, thats the problem though. I don't think there is any one in the world who owns a cochliodon and a suttonorum. So most of the ID is through speculation and matching the pleco with the description when it was described. So no one can be sure.

There are, however, a few people who does come across both species. And they are the fishermen who lived around the river where these plecos are. They fish them out once in a while and these usually end up in their dinner plate. Anyway, from their description, they are saying that when young, both looked pretty much the same. So there is no way to tell the difference. But when fully groung, they suttonorum is said to have a grayish blue colour. The cochliodon is darker. The shape of the suttonroum is flatter. That's about all I have and ofcourse the part of the river where they catch them is also determining factor too.

Nice pics J.

After having many discussions with people over it being cochliodon or suttonorum, I did some research...after reviewing many pics, I now believe it to be cochliodon as well.

Not that it matters. It is an awesome fish and would welcome it back into my collection some day.

Thanks man.

So far several people have said that he's a P. cohliodon. Btw, he's settled in a bit now and more comfortable in his now home. He's definitely a very interesting plec to raise.
