Hi guys,
I want to get a pair of blue eye pleco from Oliver. I'll start saving money now and I hope that in 1/2 year, I'll be about to sell enough zebras to pay up for a pair of blue eye. But seeing that Oliver has a sale price if you buy 4, I was wondering if I can partner up with some one to get 4 from him.
Remember 1/2 a year. I hope he still have some coming in then.
Please PM me if you are interested.
Thanks
Peter

Good luck on the business there Rich and if you need any sort of accounting or business advice let me know (could always use a new client to feed my addiction ;) ) As for selling the Zebras, let me know when you are about to do that... I may want to purchase a couple to go with the bunch I have now to diversify the genetic pool.

Oh my. That's is such a good deal. I wonder if he can sex them or not. I really hate to get a pair of male, like the way I started with my zebras. Imagine trying to breed zebras with a pair of males for 2 years. LOL.

At 16", I'm sure there would be some way to sex them be it by shape or by venting. I'd give Oliver a shout and see if he can see the difference.

Last time I asked him, which wasn't too long ago he said that he could not sex them. :(

I'm not sure how much experience he has (I assume quite a bit), but maybe he would be kind enough to post some pictures for the people at either PF or PC to ID....you would be spending close to 2Gs per fish, so I'm sure he could do that much.

I think asking to sex these fish would be a hit or miss. Last time I asked him about them he said they were not 16'' but smaller and all the big ones werer sold off.

Breeding them isn't really at the top of my agenda so I actually would prefer them to be around 12" in size. I would actually be worried if they are 16". I want some young and fit blue eyes, not an old timer that's about to expire. This will allow me a few years to slowly study and admire them before I condition them to breed.
But ofcourse if they exibit breeding behaviour, I might have to scramble and do something about it. But I really don't want to go through another episode of endless dead fry because of my inexperience. I might actually lose all my hair this time.
As for him posting them at PF or PC. I kind of doubt it. There where alot of people holding things back and arguing whether they are cochliodon or suttonorum. The problem is that PF and PC don't really have people that had experiences with blue eyes. Most people have never even laid eyes on a suttonorum before. So never mind trying to ask them to sex them.
At a guess, I would have to say that a round vent is a female and a round plus pointy tip is a male. But what really would stump you is that if all the blue eyes you're looking at have round vent. Now that would really be confusing.

easy way to get a six foot aquarium into your basement is to take it down in pieces and assemble on site LOL .....Always an option

Heh, that did cross my mind. But if I do that, I know that one day, I'll have to take it apart again if I move. Not something I'd like to spend time doing when I am moving. I will just keep on dreaming that I'll be able to buy a bigger house one day.
Anyway, seriously though, I did kind of want to breed them eventually. But it will might take years of trying though. For one thing, they might not be cave spawners. They might have preffer hollow wooden trunk instead. Besides, I don't want a repeat with what I did for the zebra pleco in my earlier years. Imagine, I spent 2 years trying to breed zebra pleco with two males. ... heh, still funny now that I think about it.

Zebrapl3co, From what I have read about the blue eyed plec I have been led to believe that they would need a hollowed wooden trunk or even burrow into mud banks on the sides of the river and that would make it even harder to reproduce for sure. I am not sure where I read that now but I was quite interested in them too at one point but I had my one and that was all I could find when I had extra cash. I also had several Zebras in my tanks over the years but it was very early on in the importation phase of them and I am sure now that what I was getting were not very healthy fish and it was still thought that they liked Algae as a staple ( SIGH ) None of my Zebras ever lasted a long time let alone have a partner in the tank at the same time LOL And as for years of trying it would likely take that for sure I had my guy for about well over 10 years maybe even close to 15 years before he passed away, was always a friendly well admired face in the tanks I had him in and was quite amicable ....he would even come out when he saw me come close to the tank and hide when people I had over would approach the tank .... I miss the one I had for sure and would love to get another but I am not prepared to spend the money that is asked for them now. But it would be awesome to see someone breed this beauty in captivity that is for certain
Keep up the good work with the Zebra though in the meantime LOL
B!
