Sorry for the exclamation points... but for the first time I got baby ABN's! I noticed my male has been staking out one specific spot for a while and never thought anything of it. Yesterday I thought I say him fanning and thought... naw can't be. So tonight I shined in the flashlight and saw a tiny tail about 3mm in size! Don't know how old they are.. but there was definately a tail there that belongs to a youngin.

Kat you got competition... lol

Are you kidding? Let me know when they are saleable...I'll be sending people your way lol. I sold off my short fin's after they dumped about 200 babies on me. My longfins are starting now as well!

And you didn't even know it was happening. It's less stressful that way, no worrying about if you have the right setup, is the current okay for the cave, will Mom and Dad cooperate and spawn. Kind of neat to just shine the flashlight and see a baby tail, isn't it?

Congrats and many more to come.:)

That'll come soon enough. Just get your experiences growing out the BN fry first. Believe me, getting them to breed is only 1/2 the way. It's growing out the fry to live on their own that is the hard part. I was caught off guard and paid a very expensive price for my inexperience. My first 7 batches of zebras have a %90 death rate before I finally got it right. And a very big no thanks to those people at zebrapleco.com for keeping their silence too. I was pretty much begging for advice and only one person there tried to help me out. But she was inexperience as well, but at least she attempted to help.
Maybe that's why I like Charlie Drew so much, it's because he didn't hold anything back. His breeding logs just tells of his experience on success as well as his failings. I only wish that he was there 3 years ago. But then again, I don't think he was breeding pleco at the time ... anyway, I am going off on my bitter ramplings.

Getting back on topic, make sure your water is super clean. That's the key to keeping healthy fry. Keeping 0 on ammonia, nitrite and nitrate may not tell you the whole story about your water parameter.

Well Nitrates in this tank are always an issue... and not that they are too high, in that they are too low... lol. It is a planted tank and always try to keep the nitrates at 10 but usually they read 5 or 0. So far I am doing the 'let nature takes is course and dad is doing a wonderful job parenting. None of the fry have ventured out from the cave yet, and there is algae wafers in there for grazing so we shall see. I am going to tempt them with some zuchinni tonight as a treat and see if I see any of them. However there are Bolivian rams in there too and the fry are still a tad on the morsel size for the rams.

How many of your fries are albino?
I've got around 50 three-week old fries off a long fin albino male and regular fin albino female, it seems none of the fries are albino:(. Question to breeders of albino and long fins, how early does albinism show? How early can you tell if they are long fins? What's the usual turnout of albinos and/or longfins from a batch?
Anyway, dad is back in his cave fanning another clutch from another regular fin albino female. It seems once they start, they will never stop!

From what I have seen they are all albino... however both parents were albino as well.

Off Topic but could you so kindly start a new thread on your L046 breeding as to keeping them alive, it does seem to be a big secret, I've spent hours on Zebrapleco.com and theres no honest feedback, nevermind the lack of communication through PM, not slagging the site, but for information on the raiseing of this little plecos information is slim,

Peace

There isn't a lot of info on the breeding of the L46 and raising of the fry, I have to agree. For someone there that seems to have batch after batch after batch... Jo can be a little remise about letting others know what she does and how she does it... and the others seem to be the same. Believe me when I finally get my other zebs and can get them breeding I will ask nicely there once... and them comment if there is no response. Everyone here is a lot friendlier I have noticed... lol

Huh? Oh, I already said it. I guess I should've make it more clearly. I hope you don't mind KnaveTO.
The big secret was clean water. You can't detect it with test kits. You'll get 0 readings but your fry will die. But if you do a water change every 2 or 3 days. That %90 death rate drops to only %20 - %10 death rate. It's really stupid, but that was the key.

And you mean to say the secret is frequent water changes, of aprox how much, 20% ever 2 days?

And yes you guys from reading your posts are alot more friendly then the other site,

by the way I'm here as I followed a post from Canadapleco on my home site, Bcaquaria,,,
