It appears that more of our beloved species of plecos are going to be or are being banned by Brazil including apparently all Hypancistrus sp.

When does the Brazilian export ban go into effect?
I've noticed that there are still a few species of Hypans appearing in stores, so I was wondering if we'll actually see any effects of the export ban anytime soon.

I would guess that the ban is in effect or going into effect soon from what I read on planetcatfish. However after reading the articles cited and trying my hand at going through the IBAMA site, Brazil isn't making it easy to verify this information.

Hmm... I am begining to think that they are recycling old age news. IBAMA have been working on that list for several years now. They only have a few people cataloging them anyway. It may take another few years to cataloge 100+ plecos and other fish as well.
And besides, the last debacle they had with the zebras. The exporters got off with a stern warning and a hand slap.
Even with the ban in effect. I think the exporters would most likely ignore it for at least one year or so. There's no point in making the ban if you can't enforce them.
But prices on the other hand will hit the roof the momment the ban goes on.

I spoke briefly about it with Blue at Exotic Finds, he's not sure if, how and when the ban will effect him and hopefully for him it won't be a problem. He's a very nice guy.

This is what Blue from Exotic Finds had to say on the latest ban posted on Plecofanatics.com
Hello Everyone!!!!
I would like to share some info about a pleco restriction, this has been going on for the past 4-6 weeks but we just got confirmation from our shipper in Brazil... so here is what falls under the restriction...
L26
L63
L64
L65
L155
L273
L27 That goes for all Panaque
ALL Hypancistrus
All Pseudacanthicus apart from L114
We do not know how long the ban will last but we will post when we get more info when things change as far as when the ban gets lifted...

this ban is for all intents currently in effect for all of the above species caught and shipped from Brazil. for species that are caught in other South American countries and shipped from them the ban to my knowledge does not apply.
Oh ok ,,, its strange, because currently most of these are available here now, through private importers, there trying to beet this ban I guess?
Peace

Well, you have to understand that Brazil don't own all the plecos. Many are shipped to Brazil from other south America countries and from Brazil, ships out to the world. They can't possible ban every pleco if it's not caught in their country.
I have a feeling that Colombia is about the be the biggest pleco export place from now on.
