My questions aren't limited to fanning, but the fanning is what started it.

My male L169 was fanning like crrrazy. I go to find the flashlight to check for eggs. By the time I get back, he's not in there anymore and I see no eggs anywhere in the cave or even kicked out of it. Do they fan for any other reason than taking care of the eggs?

Second question: They have two driftwood caves (natural, not carved in by me) and neither one of them is a deadend, one way in/out cave. One has *three* ways in and one has *two*. Will they need a cave that is limited to one way in, one way out in able to spawn?

You will need a cave with one end closed so he can trap the female in the cave. If you use a tunnel instead of a cave the female will be able to escape.
I see lots of my males fanning with no signs of spawning.

Likewise. Fanning is not necessarily proof of spawning. Sometimes it's the male trying to attract a female, to no avail.

Thanks so much for answering.

They get a new tank in a few weeks and I had already planned to get them a true cave vs the driftwood caves/tunnels they have now, so it'll work out better. But, yeah, I catch him fanning away a good bit now while she's over in the other cave/tunnel ignoring him.
