Well I am really wanting to make a pond here, it would be quite large. I really know very little about Koi or Goldfish. I love the look of nice fully grown Orandas however and wonder if they can be kept in there overwinter?
I know I can overwinter Koi in a pond no problem.
Also any idea where in the GTA you can get some decent quality fish? I know the stuff at big als just isnt great at all.
thanks
Rich

Check out Kijiji.ca for the Toronto area and or Barrie, etc. There were some good sized Koi and Comets for sale a few days ago. They both overwinter well in outdoor ponds. We had overwintered those types in our pond for 2 or 3 years but we had to cover our pond with styrofoam/plywood and a couple of rocks to hold the styro and plywood down through the winter as it wasn't deep enough to not freeze solid. You can also overwinter plants in there as well.

I have Shubunkins in my little pond, but brought them in for the winter. They are fairly hardy and could have stayed out.

I both love and hate koi. They are beautiful but distructive. I have one pond of all lionheads and they keep thier pond beautiful. May I suggest the Wakin Goldfish. Aquatic Kingdom just got in 2 tanks full. They are slim line with a double tail and come mainly in red and white. They are very hardy and are the main pond fish in Japan. They are $9.99 each.

Charlie I forgot if you keep your Lion Heads in the pond over winter? I do like them a lot as well. Will checkout the Wakin's.

My lionheads are in the pond the year round and most were hatched and raised out of doors. They share the pond with some gold dojo's and the Japanese rice fish the Gold Medaka. All are winter hardy.
