Thanks for the tip re fungus. To a newbie like myself - is that something easy to see/recognize?

Fungus can be seen easily or be very difficult to spot. It all depends on what stage of development it is in. Sometimes it can only be seen as a slight haze if you catch it in the light at a proper angle.
