Cory Spawning Season

The cory spawning season is here. There are two seasons the spring and the fall. The lows caused by rainy spells help trigger the spawnings. Lots of water changes almost daily and the addition of a pail of RO is all that is needed to get some species started. My weitzmani started with the rains this past weekend and hopefully they will continue to spawn right through until summer as they did the first year that I had them. The Aspidoras albater have started to spawn again and the hatches are good. I only wish that I was able to setup more species at the same time.

I had no clue that fish can detect the current season outside their little aquarium ecosystems.

I have gotten most of mine to spawn by doing a 50% water change just before it rains.

The lateral line on a fish is their computor. It is sensitive to the barametric pressure changes. That along with a cool water change at the right time is often the trigger. Sometimes they spawn when the lows come in and sometimes when the lows move out. Frogs have this ability also.

a pair from my group of c. barbatus spawned on the glass yesterday immediately after a (approx. 10-15 day delayed) 50% water change. their tank mates were inappropriate for the attempt, and they quickly lost an 8-10 egg accumulation, but i will be better prepared for them this fall. it was a complete surprise for me, to see this variant spawn at all, because i assumed the water to be much too warm for them. the tank is set at 72f (22c).

Any temperature below 75 is good for barbatus. They will spawn again in a week with a good feeding of black worms and a water change.

Just noticed a 1cm fry in my large pseuda tank. Only one I can find.......there are no corys in that tank right now, but a month ago, weitzmani, concolor and sterbai have all been inhabitants of that tank...and the fry is too young to tell right now.

My Metaes are spawning about once a week now. I have a few fry from them but they seem to be the only ones spawning.
