Well managed to spin up the tile cutter the other day and make a couple caves. The first one completed I took to the DRAS exec to see what others thought and with a quick rinse (had cured a good 3 days) went into a tank of Zebs, with an order for at least 3 more. :) Didn't even manage to get one into my tanks first..

Anyway I have just finished making a few more and wanted to share..

Internal dimensions are 5-1/2"x1-1/2"x1-1/4"

Nice work, I 've a few coconuts laying around I've been meaning to do the same thing too.

Is that slate tile you're using? It sure doesn't look like the stuff I get from Big Al's. Much more uniform in thickness.

Slate tile yep.. much easier to work with and the mark-up that BA's has on any of thier rock is nutz when ya do a lil looking around.

The dimension you took, does it include the thinkness of the tile? or just the space (excluding the tile thinkness).
I find that 5 1/2" is a bit long for zebra pleco. Try 4 1/2" - 5".

Looking closer the internal length is closer to 5" as the bottom plate is 6" long with almost a 1/2" lip at the front and the tile for the back insert is about 1/2" as well.

You can sometimes get 12x12x3/8 slate tiles at Home Depot for about $3.00 ea.

Have to take a trip to Home Depot again soon as I am currently outta slate unless you count the 1" think 36"x7" slabs I cut outta the pool table top. Figure caves from them would be a bit heavy lol..

Zoban & Bwhiskered, thanks for the heads up on slate tiles at Home Depot. I went in on the weekend and they were clearing some 12 x 12" grey slate tiles at $ 2.00 ea. Great deal so I bought some. You're right, way cheaper than BA's.
