It is quite amazing how common zebras are becoming among us all now a day. 3 days ago someone posted on GTA that they were looking for zebras and they have 3 or 4 different responses of people offering to sell them some. No way would this have happened a couple of years ago, or for the prices people are selling them at now. Competition, bringing the prices down.
I would have to say that Toronto area has more zebras then prob. anywhere else in North America.
Whats everyone else thoughts on this?
Do you have zebras? Are you spawning them?

I agree more people have them then ever before. I really don't see a sudden influx of zebra plecos in this area for sale. Recently a guy from Milton sold 5 to a member here and another guy now has 2 for sale. I might be the third person. I have not bred zebras but I'm thinking of selling some that i raised from little guys if the price is right.
Where are all the rest?
I'm not including suppliers like Oliver etc....

ya, I see it as more of a people are getting rid of them....not so much more in the area.
To add onto Gino's list, the breeder from London recently sold hers also....so Gino, you'll be the fourth lol.

Ron breeds them as well, not sure if he keeps all the babies or not though. Kyle has a good group also, they are not spawning for him though :(
I am not to sure how many bcarlos has for sale.
Maybe it is the same ones just going around from person to person lol

I edited my previous post. I meant to point out there are not too many local sellers.

I don't see that there are that many more zebras. I think they are just changing hands as people get tired of them or give up trying to spawn them. Often they are giving up just as they are reaching spawning age and size. The stores don't have them and Aquabid prices are still sky high.

Just saw this now lol
I honestly believe that the zebra market is over inflated, so I brought mine in directly from a contact in SA. I've got three breeding colonies, so we'll see what happens next month! If they spawn, you can bet that you guys and my friends at Dragonfish Canada will have first dibs on fry. And I can guarantee that they will be going for under $100 a piece.

The price of all fish species depends on availability, the size of spawnings, the time it takes to grow them to a marketable size and the difficulty in getting them to breed.

You have three colonies. They are not breeding colonies until they have bred. At present I have a tank with five fish that I hope will become a breeding group or colony.

I certainly hope that they are becoming more common and the price comes down. If it drops below $100, I'd be very interested in getting some as they are very interesting fish, but at the prices they command now, it's not for the faint of heart.

I also have a colony of zebras. No fry yet therefore they are not breeders! These plecos are not easy to breed. There can be no guarantees.

LOL tobalman, if you ever want someone to babysit (and try to breed them) you know where I live :)
It is possible that many are giving up on trying to breed the and as you say Charlie they do take a long time to mature. Best of luck to any who have them and let us know if you do get them to spawn. They are awesome to look at, and the baby pics I've seen on the zebra pleco forum are just too cute.
