View Full Version : Breeder Tanks
I was thinking about setting up another pleco tank using either a 30 or 40 gal breeder tank. Both are 36" x 18" but the 40 gal is 4" deeper at 16". Does anyone see an advantage to using the deeper tank? In my other tanks, the plecos pretty much stick to the bottom six inches. Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated.
Hey, I've graduated! I'm not a bushy nose fry anymore.

Aside from the extra water volume being easier to stabalise if it is to be a pleco only tank there are no advantages that I can think of.
The added volume as mentioned does make it more stable in terms of temperature, ph, blah blah blah including water going off based on over feeding or other issues.
Good point. The tank will be a dedicated pleco tank stocked with herbivores and omnivores. I'm going to leave the carnivores in with the discus since they enjoy similar diets. Deeper tank may be a better overall choice.

If the price is close I would go larger. Never know what want to do tomorrow. 10or20 now is better then 50or60 later..

I'd go 40 breeder too, prob. easier to find them also. They are a great size tank for plecos!
I checked out both tanks at Big Al's today and I guess it'll be the 40 gal. There is only a $10.00 difference between it and a 30. When you see them side by side, the 40 looks much better. More room for wood and assorted structure.
