Here is a must read. The whole world is screwed up. Canada leads the way.

Wow, you read through all that?
I gave up after a few pages, but it looks like it's only intented to target eatable fish and not ornamental fish. ... There is a list of fish in the very end. I don't really see any fish I recognized. Not sure if it's targeted at fish in the ornamental trade.

Thats how the permit business started with Pet Foods. First it was anything with beef by products to protect from mad cow. Then they went to fish meal and shrimp. All these bans and things have not fully hit us just yet. So many fish food products such as frozen daphnia, cyclops, blood worms and other frozen foods and larva that have been coming from China are all restricted. When the supplies that got through before the ban are all gone we may have to come up with other food ideas. A wholesaler I know has not yet got clearance to bring in the frozen brine shrimp from the USA.
There is another act on the books in the US that if passed will require all fish coming into the country will first have to each be studied and approved. The way these idiots get carried away it doesn't look good. Our idiots are sure to follow suite or lead the way.
If you read enough of it the pet fish trade will be hard hit. Looks like you may have to get any fish that you want before the end of the year. If this passes 2011 will put a damper on new fish coming in legally.

I was told that this act has been squashed already.

There are a few well known fish on the list requiring permits to be brought in to Canada soon that I own or have owned. I am sure that you and others on this site must have owned or do own some of these fish.
guppies
goldfish
angula angula eel
walking catfish
dwarf gourami
zebra danio
koi
glass knife fish
blue catfish
channel catfish
barramundi
chinese emperor
golden orfe
nile tilapia
giant gourami (goramy)
marble goby
rosy barb
nile perch
spotted scat
discus
archer fish
blue (3 spot) gouramie
snakeskin gouramie
also I noticed the wels catfish which I have studied for many years but never purchased because of my wallago leeri which would never allow it to live in my big tank.
If these fish require permits to bring in their prices will skyrocket. Also there is the chance that permits will be denied.
I really don't know why these restrictions are coming. I don't know of anyone dying from being infected by his guppy.

This has not actually been squashed. It is already approved and in the works for a March 2011 release. We have been chatting about it on GTAAquaria. I get updates from CFIA and got the info from one of their bulletins. They are transitioning the duties for imports of fish from Fisheries & Oceans, to the Food Inspection agency. It supposedly will not cause the death-nell of our hobby, however it might increase costs as there may be a QT period of all ornamental fish comming into the country.
The GTAA thread is here
