Here is an external fry box that was designed in Japan. May be a good idea. I do see where improvements could be made.618

It appears to look similar to a aqua clear filter with little modifications.
With no internal power head of course.

I thought that in some cases it could be handy and easy to service. Like you say a pilot model could be made from an old filter to give it a try.

A couple of flaws that I see pertain to water flow and temperature. With only an airline lifting water into the box sitting outside the tank, I don't think you will get sufficient flow to maintain a good temperature. If water were to be pumped inside the box it might be ok. I still like the ones that stay inside tanks better.
