I had posted a thread about all my calico BN longfin pleco fry were dying. They all died which was sad. Well, dad was babysitting more eggs and they have now hatched. Day 2 now. I know they live off their egg sacs for a week but I don't want to go the same route as last time. So, what should I be feeding these guys once they finish their egg sac?

I usually just feed them the same thing as the adults. Once their egg sacs are gone, they will forage for their food right away.

I also find having some algae in the tank (on plants, rocks, glass and such) is always beneficial

Fingers crossed Barb. Good luck and let us know how it goes. I remembered giving my BN spawn flakes, baby brineshrimps, etc.

I would move them to a breeder net (fry saver) in the same tank with with their parents, I also placed an air stone right beside it(so they have more water circulation).

If your water temp = 78deg F. They will start to eat at date 4th. and I feed my new fry with New Life Spectrum cichlid formular (crush to the finest) just a little at a time and I always removed the uneat food after 8 hrs and replaced them with the newer one. I also do 10% water change every 3 days. When they reach 3 weeks old, beside feeding them with NLS, I started introduce sweet potato (see picture on the link above.) which will last in for 3 days in the tank.

By using the technique mention above, I only lost very few weak one but 90% of my fry made it to 1.5" (5 months) before I sell them.

Good luck

For some reason many strains of long fin calicos are very weak. The short fins are strong. It just doesn't make sense.

Okay, thanks everyone for your help and info. Off to get a fry saver and will keep you posted on how it goes.

When did you move the fry to the fry saver? When they start to forage outside the cave or before they finish their egg sac?

If the eggs were layed in a large tank the fry may have a hard time finding food. I most often move male and eggs with whatever he used as a cave to a 10g tank (use a cycled sponge filter that has been running in the larger tank)

I take about 1/4 of the water from the larger tank, use declorinated for the rest and make sure the temp is the same. Move dad and eggs and when the fry are eating move out the dad. You will have to clean a small tank with fry every day or two, but they will grow quick.

I move dad and eggs (with the cave) to a 10g tank. Cycle a sponge filter in the tank the eggs were layed in before the move. Once the fry are out and looking for food I remove dad.

The 10 will have to be cleaned every day or two ,cut the fry can be moved to a larger tank once they are eating well.
