Thanks everyone. I'm not sure how many there are because the male won't let them out of his sight.
Hong......I hope your patience will be rewarded soon and your zebras will spawn too.

Hey Gino,

Although it was no surprise to me that you would have bred them some day, I wish you all the best with the total fry count that may be currently guarded by Papa 134.
We have seen much success with these guys, so great job Gino.
When the little guys are ready....please post some pics.

Good going Gino. What seemed to trigger them? Mine are showing activity but no luck so far.

I think the Aroma from the italian cooking triggered the spawn.
Just my guess,

Dale,

Thanks. I'm not sure if you remember about 4 years ago I called you to ask about Leopard Frog plecos. You had some for sale but I didn't get the opportunity to drive down to Detroit. Soon after I found 6 little ones in local stores. These are the ones that finally bred for me.

I removed about 25 babies from the cave. They still have a bit of an egg sac but look to be fine.

Everyone wants to know if I did anything special to trigger them to spawn. Over time I have tried a number of things: cool water change, RO water, alder cones etc. I'm really not sure what the magic trick was.

Having said this, I believe very clean water and appropriate foods are important. These fish are omnivorous and need a good varied diet.

What are you feeding yours?

Here is what I feed them. The list is in no particular order of importance nor is it an endorsement of any product. It's primarily for peckoltia and hypancistrus plecos and is based on my experience. There are many other good foods that could be added to or substituted from the list.

Dry foods:
- New Life Spectrum 1mm pellets
- Hagen Nutrafin Max flakes
- Hikari algae wafers
- Wardley's tropical crumbles
- Wardley's shrimp pellets
- John's earthworm pellets

and frozen foods:
- sliced zucchini
- brine shrimp
- bloodworms

That's it folks, I have no secret recipe. I just alternate a variety of foods. Some plecos are reluctant to eat certain foods so keep an eye on it. Do not let uneaten food stay in the tank for long.

Happy breeding!
