Just got my first spawn of Neon Blue Rams. They hatched this morning and so far so good.
I hope the prove as easy as my German Blue Rams. Up until now most stores and hobbyist have been having trouble with the fish that are being imported. Hopefully the home grown ones will be hardy.

Congrats on the spawn! I have my fingers crossed for you that you can raise as many of them as you have of the German Blues.

I wish your fry long and happy life. Let me know if any of them will be for sale. I was trying to get them for some time, but no store was able to keep them alive for long enough.

The issue with the neon blue/electric blue rams is Aeromonas salmonicida also known as furunculosis. I treat this with a full dose of Furan 2 and a half dose of oxytetracycline for 3 days, then I change water and treat with a full dose of oxytetracyline. If not treated, they either just die quickly, or get large ulcers on their sides and die one by one. If fish appear to be faded after first treatment, water quality is poor and should be changed and fish treated back to original dosage.

Nice Charlie, congratulation. How do you fair with the normal blue rams?
I guess you'll find out how they fair at the 1 month mark. That's when they mysteriously drop dead for no reason.
Good luck and please keep us updated.

I don't for see any problems as it appeared to be a strong spawning with only 6 eggs that fungused.

At this time Alternative Aquariums in Burlington has had some in for 3 weeks and they are still doing good. Their price is $25.00 each.

Congrats Charlie! Are they still doing well?

The first spawning was a bit weak with only about 50 fry still surviving compared to 300 or more in most of my regular German Blue Ram spawnings. This is often the case in a first spawning. The same pair has just spawned again and we will see how this one comes along.

Goodmorning all!

I came home last night and to my surprise found a clutch of 100-200 eggs from my German Blue Rams (this in a community tank with other Rams, Discus, Tetras and Plecos). Unlike my other spawns 15 years ago where the parents ate the eggs within 12 hours, this pair is guarding the clutch. Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed? Do I remove the driftwood with eggs to a separate tank? or leave in place and let nature run its course?

Thanks in advance!

Confused but happy,
Blackwater

just leave them in there and let them be. if you disturb the "nest" the female will eat all of the eggs.

and congrats.

Thanks Hitch!

Today is my water change day, do I conduct it carefully siphoning water away from the nest?

Cheers!

Mine lay eggs every 20-30 days. Male guards them for up to 24-36 hrs and then eats them. I would love to know what to do as well.

In my case, the female is guarding the eggs and the male is guarding the perimeter 5 cm radius from the nest. More later!

Goodmorning all!

Just an update. Some of the eggs have been consumed and now the female is protecting what remains, about 50%. The other pair of Rams, also spawned...so I have two clutches going.

More when I return from work.

ya I wouldnt want to disturb them too much with water changes. The eggs will hatch soon so just hold off until then.

If not disturbed, the female will eat the eggs that gone bad.

Keep us updated.

If your water is soft enough the eggs will hatch in about 52 hours. They can then the syphoned off into a pan or jar with an air stone until they are free swimming and ready to feed. Best is to put in a 2" square of slate flat on the bottom in a corner for them to spawn on. This can then be removed and hatched as you would angels except the water must be very soft and slightly acid. I usually get up to 300 fry from a spawn this way.

Hi Guys and Gals!

Bad news, all eaten. The first batch lasted almost two days and I good see some morphological changes. The second group barely lasted 36 hours.

I will remove and rear them separately next time.

Thanks for all the great information.

Yeah, it's pretty rare to find a pair that can rear them propertly. In a good setting, the male and females takes turns careing for the eyes and fry. One guarding and the other taking care of the eggs. But I found that capture breed tend to have funny bahaviours like the male and female fighting amounst themself and at one time the male actually beatup the female pretty badly (if I had not intervien, he would've killed her.) And ofcourse, most develope the bad bahaviour of eating the good eggs. They are supposed to care of the eggs by eating the fugussed ones.
