I'm only able to run 1 tank and was wondering what would happen if I keep my
Brown BN with the Calico BN? Would they actually cross breed? And if so how would the fry turn out, hybrids of the two? Or half the fry brown, and half the fry calico?

I am unfamiliar with the genetics of the calico.

But yes they will easily breed. They are the exact same species, so it wouldnt count as cross breed and not hybrids.

If you can, get another calico (of oppisite sex). The genetics will be all mixed up once you start breeding them.

So if they breed, are you saying it would be the case like Albino X Brown. Like a portion of the fry being albino, and the other being brown depending on genetics?

I already have a Male and Female Calico in there, but I will be adding two Female Brown BN, so I was thinking it will mix up either way.

as I said, I am unfamiliar about the the genetics that led to the calico colour variant. So i cant postulate on the outcome of the spawn.

Np, thanks anyway. Anyone else know the outcome of Calico BN x Brown BN?

The first generation will all turn out brown. The only thing that could alter that is if the brown has a calico gene which would indicate that he or she is a cross breed. I have a pair of calicos that have a small percentage of albino fry indicating that one of their parents was an albino. Some of this crossing has beeen done to improve colour and strengthen the calico strain.

Oh i'm stuck with browns eh. I was hoping for a few calicos, I dont think the brown that I have has any mixed genes. So I guess 2nd generation might have a chance for some calicos then?

You never know what is in your browns genes. I had 2 browns breed and they threw 50% albinos....

I have a good friend who crossed longifn calico with a longfin albino. He got these weird brown ancistrus with brighter yellow coloration than Ancistrus sp.3/cirrhosis. They are the original "lemon drop" ancistrus. The lemon drop ancistrus throw sp.3, albino, calico, lemon drop, longfin albino, longfin calico, longfin sp.3, and longfin lemondrop all out of one pair of fish.

Wow that's what I call variety lol.

And Canadapleco you're right. The brown could actually have mixed genes. But I've put them together now so we'll see what happens, hopefully I can come back soon and share how they turn out.
