Greetings fellow plecaholics.. :)
I'm reading mixed opinions on the net...Need your opinion.
I do 30% weekly water changes in my tanks. I use tap water, and add Prime Water Conditioner (removes Chlorine, Chloramine and detoxifies Ammonia). I add the water conditioner directly in the tank just before adding the tap water.
I understand that it would be better to condition the water before it gets into the tank...but is it really necessary? I guess I could purchase a huge reservoir..but I currently don't have the place for that yet.
I don't use buckets to add water to the tank, I use a hose attached to the sink. I have 2x 55 gallons a 1x 130 gallon and using buckets to add water is too long for me.
My fish are healthy...no major issues...I take care of my plecs....but im starting to get an expensive collection of Plecs, and I dont want to take any chances.
Let me know...
Thanks
well your one up on me.
i don't use any water conditioners in my tanks.
i do 50% once a week straight from the tap.
our water is fairly soft with a ph 6.6.
never had a fish loss yet that was due to water changes .

50% weekly water change with no conditioners???? Now that can't be good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wow. What kind of filtration do you have? in my 130Gallon, I have a Fluval FX5 and an Astro 2212. Combined it is supposedly good for a 500 Gallon tank...but realistically probably good enough for a 250 Gallon.

I add it as I am filling the tank and after it is filled no problems for me doing it this way.

I add the water to a bucket and dechlor there. Then I pump it into my tanks. The reason I do this is because there is a chance I can catch the water municiple juicing high contents of chlorine into the tab. You can easily smell it.

LMAO!!
Adz1 is my neighbor & I find it quite interesting his "luck??" with not treating the water. I myself use prime & the python as well. Add my prime in just before refilling & no ill effects with any of my plecos in 11 different tanks or other fish for that matter. That being said, I also know of several others out here that don't treat their water (just temperature adjustment) when doing changes & they also report no ill effects. Coincidence?? Luck?? I don't know but for a couple of extra bucks for some prime, I'm not gonna roll the dice.
Cheers!!

I use a Python to refill my tanks straight from the tap. The temperature is adjusted to be close to the temperature of my tank, but a temperature fluctuation is not a big deal as that is a natural occurrence in the wild. The Prime I add during the refilling process.

So we have some that Treat their water before (in buckets), some that treat their water during, others during & after, and others not at all....and all have the same results!

weird i cant imagine dumping straight tap water into my tank..... never have done that. maybe the amount of conditioned water already in the tank balances it out?
i've always filled my buckets, put in my conditioner and let them sit for a couple days. i know that technically chorine will evaporate over a few days, but still

Unfortunately I don't have the room in my place to be able to store water for a few days. So what I do is my only option.
