My male L333 is always hiding in his cave. But he usually just sits there, now the past couple of days I noticed him fanning. I looked in today and I saw an orange patch in the end, so I lifted the lid and sure enough there's eggs in there. The eggs are huge compared to Albino BN eggs. I put the complete cave with him in it in a fry saver.
Now the waiting.
I'm not sure what to feed carnivorous babys.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Matt

Thanks to everyone :)
no I didn't use RO water (haven't gotten a RO/DI filter YET) just regular water changes
But
the tank had gotten really nasty from some rotting plant matter. there was all kinds of particles suspended in the water.
so I added a HOB penguin 350 to help clean the water and that seemed to trigger them
also I had a Korilia 2 which I had to unplug to add the HOB so the current was reduced and the direction changed

Hello Matt,
My L066 spawned for the fisrt time this July.
I found them when they were allready 6-7mm (17x of them) when doing a water change, one got in the siphon and I noticed him...
I catched them and put them in a fry saver that I bought from JK on this forum.
Since than I feed them 3 times a day a mixed of :
- Wardley algea wafer
- Hikari Carnivore pellet
- Hikari algea wafer
- OSI Shrimp pellet
- HBH vegie wafer
I crush the pellet in small powder, every morning and when coming back from work I remove from the fry saver the left over and the poo.
I also try to do a 5g water change every day and 10g twice a week to keep the water clean, it's a 50g tank.
By the way, a new batch of fry hatched this monday !
I only a biginner at pleco breeding, but I hope I help a little
Have a Great Weekend

Matt,
Congrats. All the foods Chouin mentioned are good choices. Just make sure you crush them very finely and don't put in too much. You must not spoil the water.

I would also feed them baby brine shrimp for the first few weeks. I have also used crushed Wardley's shrimp pellets, tropical crumbles and NLS.

Hope this helps.

Congrats to Chouin on your second spawn.

Matt and Chouin,
Are your L333 the yellow or white stripe type?

Just got a nice 3 inch Female 333 today, for my 4.5 inch male. They are very shy fish, and I rarely see them in the day. Im going to make some caves and point a powerfilter on the caves. We'll see what happens from there! Hopefully my luck will be as good as yours.

Congrats!

I now order them online...but here are my favorite places (in order) in Montreal

1) Aquarium du Nord - St. Hubert (Small store, but always have nice species)
2) Aquarius - Jean-Talon Est ( limited selection, but worth a try)
3) Nature Pet Store (west-island) (Expensive - Just got some new stock this week)
4) Big Al's - Sources/40 (Havent had a decent selection in 5 months)
5) Aqua-tropical (Decarie/Pare) (Cheapest prices, limited selection)

Take care

I have never tried Ocean Nutrition Instant Brine Shrimp. When I had no freshly hatched brine shrimp, I just used frozen baby brine. It worked well.

Hi there

May I ask where you order them from online? Trying to get some in ottawa and haven't found a source as of yet. Thanks :)

I was wondering if I should take the lid off the cave and check on the eggs? Or will it disturb him too much? I can't see in the cave too well with it in the fry saver. When I try to shine a light in to see he covers the end of the cave so you can't see anything.
Thanks Matt

I think the best idea is to leave him alone and not disturb him.

I just found this little guy. :D
I hope he'll be OK even though he got kicked out.
I'm going to get an airstone to put in the frysaver with him. I have a tiny sponge filter in there now lifting the water over the edge into the main tank.

I wanted to know when I should take the male out of the fry saver and return him to the tank?

Rush2112

Matt,

You don't have to keep him in the fry saver if the wigglers are ok. He hasn't touched the fry so far and that's a good thing. If he is stressed you never know what may happen. Be careful getting him out if fry are still in the cave.

Are most of the fry still in the cave or have they been kicked out?

Just make sure you have some light aeration with an air stone. You have to keep the water moving to replace the father's fanning.

I think they've all been kicked out now. There's 20 now but 2 of them are dead.
I have a small air stone and sponge filter in there with them.
I'll try and return the male to the tank tonight. He won't leave the cave so I'll have to return it with him in it.
Should I put some java moss in the fry saver to give them some cover? Also should I put a netrite snail in the fry saver to eat any excess food?

Rush2112

The air stone and sponge filter are good. I didn't use any plants but I did put in a very small curved piece of driftwood to give them something to hide under. I found they remained calm this way.

Sorry, I don't know anything about nerite snails.

To keep the frysaver clean, I carefully siphoned any debris daily with a piece of airline tubing. It was a bit time consuming but it worked for me.

Last night I tried to put him back in the tank. When I tried to get the rest of the fry out of the cave I saw there was a clump of unhatched eggs still. I put him back in the fry saver but he kicked out the eggs. I put the airstone beside the eggs and this morning I saw the last one hatching. I got a small piece of wood and I'm going to try and put him in the main tank again tonight.

I have found that live baby brine shrimp is the best food for most of the fancy pleco fry. Pellets and other man made food foul the water too quickly.

Should I get one of the kits they sell at BA's for hatching them? Or is there a better way?
How many fry do you usually get from your King Tigers? I think I have about 30 now.

Wow, this little guy really looks fat. A little too fat. May not be good thing in the long run. You might want to change the diet a bit.

Well, you already move him. But don't diturb him too much in the future. Unless you are prepare to move him out and separate him with the fry. Some males eat their eggs when you disturb him. One of my zebras male is like that.

Thanks

I think you may have 2 batches in there. Usually, they all hatch in 24 hrs. The ones that don't are either eaten or kicked out by the dad because they will die. From the look at your fry picture, give them six or seven days before you add food in. 7 days is how long it takes for them to absorb their yoke sac. From there, it may take a few days before they are starved into eating. Some may eat early and some just starve to death rather than eating. At any event, the time line goes like this:
1) eggs are laid
2) ~7 days later, eggs hatch as wigglers with yoke sack.
3) another ~7 days later, all yoke sack are eaten.
4) ~ another 2 weeks period, either they learn to eat or they will perish. Those that are misfits will die during this period as well. I control the amount of food at this time being careful not to over feed until they are 3 months old because they can die from over eating. No control yet, just like a gold fish. (From my experience anyway, I find that the mortality rate is lower when I control the amount of food they eat rather than have unlimited food available. You can tell that you feed too little if they have sunken stomach and too much if they are bloated like they still have a bit of yoke sac left. I am sure others would disagree. Or other would have they own way of growing out their fry. But regardless to say, this is an important development stage. Mostly internal growth with a fairly good growth in size as well. The strongest fry will show it's mark already by the end of the first month.)
5) From 1st month to 3rd month. They grow slowly in length. They grow, but just not that noticalbe as the first month.
6) 3rd month - 4th month, first growth spur. So I feed with high protien food. You can also over feed although I still get 1 or 2 every now and then, that died from over eating.
7) 4th month - 6 months, growth slow down again like #5.
8) 6th months - 8 months, 2nd growth spur. So you can feed a bit more.
9) ... you are pretty much set. All the fry that should die are problably dead. Any suddent death from here on is probable because you screw something up. (er.. take note, they are still not big enough to eat blood worm whole and can choke to death). If you are good, even the drawf and misfits are still alive. You'll have to separate these guys. Tend to them for as long as you can, but expect them to sudently stop eating or just die. You did more and better than what nature or it's parents would've done.)

Edit: oh and these are from growing my zebras, but I am sure it's almost the same thing with the L066 or the L333.
