Origin: Rio Xingú, Pará, Brazil

Presented: DATZ 09/1989

Size: 8 - 10 cm

Water equivalents:
T: 26-30° C
pH: 5,5 - 7,5
KH: 0 5° dH
GH: 0 20° dH

Recommended basin size: starting from 60 cm

Sex differences: Male with broader head, longer Interopercularodontoden and more Odontoden on the first chest fin jet. Female usually somewhat smaller.

Social behavior: Calm, well compatible kind.

Etymologie:
“Hyp” of Greek “hypo”: stands for the reduced Kieferbezahnung compared with Ancistrus. “- ancistrus” of Greek “ankistron” = “Widerhaken”: named-giving is the Interopercularodontoden.
Since the description 1991 the L-number 46 is no longer good-natured designation! The correct designation reads since then Hypancistrus zebra!!!
Hypancistrus zebra is reliably one of the Welse, which are mainresponsible for the boom of the “L-Welse”.

Care: In basins starting from about 60 centimeters can be maintained four to five animals problem-free together. To the mechanism in any case caves and/or stone columns should belong, into which the day-active shrink from themselves, but quite animals withdraw can. Even if the Zebrawelse were kept already very successful and increased in the Malawi sea-basin, calm are, recommended not to aggressive fish which leave also something fodder remaining to the Welsen. H. zebra nourishes itself omnivor, Trockenfutter of all kinds naturally also willingly is eaten main. Who cannot leave it absolutely and its animals to green fodder to force wants, it should try with Rosenkohl, Zucchini or cold treatment peas. As far as I know Zebrawelse do not need wood. From me maintained animals ignored also soft Moorkienholz always generously. Flared out animals from the trade let themselves be developed partially very well with living Cyclops or Artemia again. The water equivalents are only secondarily important. Good water quality (little nitrate, no nitrite, high oxygen content…) by regular water changes and a sufficient filtering basic condition for a successful care is natural.

Breed: Initially were there hot discussions - strong current necessarily or not, 29 to 30°C absolutely necessarily or not? In the meantime it shows up that Hypancistrus zebra the current is rather all the same and also the water temperature plays only a secondary role. Tests of different breeders resulted in that the kind adjusts Laichaktivitäten with 25°C downward. An important condition are as close a caves as possible. As basis for the building of Tonröhren one can use: Width: Body width + a spread Brustflosse; Height: Body height + dorsal fin height and length: Total length males + a third body length. Bamboo or slate caves in similar dimensions goes naturally also. To the offspring it is recommended to set not a pair but a group from at least five animals. In small groups the females laichen with the same male, at larger groups frequently always come also different males to the course. The clutches of eggs are usually quite small - more than 12 eggs so well never come off, usually slip only six to eight young fish. The eggs are relatively large for it. After approximately 14 days those swim already 15 millimeters are enough young fish free and can with Artemia and/or rubbed Trockenfutter separately or in the parents basin be drawn up. With 90 per cent of the breeders the young fish grow very slowly. The other ten per cent prove that also these Welse can be long over five centimeters after one year already. To be important it seems that the young fish must look particularly in the first weeks be located in the fodder and not for food. Generally one can say that to old Artemia Nauplien (over twelve hours) contains few nutrients. A Boosterung (feeding the Nauplien with Chlorella, Spirulina etc.) creates remedy. As is the case for most young fish daily water changes support growth enormously.
Since December 2004 is forbidden the catch and export by Hypancistrus zebra for protection of species reasons!
